CUBA BIKE TOUR ITINERARY
FRIDAY – Day 1: Havana
Welcome to Cuba! You will arrive at the international airport in Havana
where we can arrange to have a car waiting for you, or you can choose to
arrange your own transportation to the elegant Hotel Habana Libre.
Day 2: Havana – Pinar del Río (approx. 10km cycling)
After breakfast you will meet your tour guide and you will journey to Pinar
del Rio, the major tobacco-growing region of Western Cuba. Here you will get
to visit a tobacco factory and discover the town on a guided walking tour.
Afterwards, we will stop for lunch and continue to the verdant
Vinales-Valley. You will then get your bikes ready for a cycling tour
through this beautiful Valley. Here you will see rolling fields of
cultivated tobacco, large Mogote rock formations and many beautiful birds.
There are many wonderful things to see in this region, including the Cueva
del Indio, a 90 meter high underground cave. Tonight you will stay at a casa
particular.
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 3: Cayo Jutías (approx. 55km cycling)
Today you will cycle to Cayo Jutias, a secluded sandy beach. Your ride takes
you through the Sierra de Oreganos, a meandering mountain range to the
northwest of Havana. Cayo Jutías is a small island attached to mainland Cuba
by a man-made causeway – cycling over this causeway is truly spectacular!
Cayo Jutias is the perfect place to go for a swim or take and optional boat
tour. We will have a picnic lunch on the beach and later in the afternoon
you can choose to bike or take the bus back to the accommodation. You will
spend the night at a casa particular.
(Lunch)
Day 4: Viñales – Valle Ancón (approx. 30km cycling)
After breakfast you will begin cycling along the Jagua Vieja Road to La
Palma in the Ancón Valley. On the way, you will stop for a fun and
educational tour of the woodland cabin where Fidel Castro held secret
meetings at the beginning of the revolution. Enjoy lunch in the beautiful,
natural, green landscape of the Ancon-Valley. You will then travel by bus to
the gorgeous Hotel Aguas Claras. Nestled in a truly spectacular natural
space, the Hotel Aguas Claras is the perfect starting point for nature
walks. We will have dinner at the hotel.
(Lunch, Dinner)
Day 5: Valle Ancón – Soroa (approx. 45km cycling)
This morning we will head to the remarkable cave formation of Cueva de los
Portales. Visit the grotto which Che Guevara used as his headquarters during
the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. After exploring this unique site
we will continue cycling the Carretera Central towards tranquil Soroa. The
route takes you through charming, rural West Cuban towns. We highly
recommend that you stop and visit the famous Orchid garden in Soroa
(optional) where you can see over 700 varieties of this delicate flower. You
will spend the night at a casa particular.
(Breakfast)
Day 6: Soroa – Las Terrazas (approx. 20km cycling)
In the morning you will journey to the Las Terrazas nature reserve. There is
a small community who lives here, in the Sierra Rosario Mountains. The 25000
ha rainforest surrounding the community is a UNESCO world heritage site. The
inhabitants make their living in forestry and ecotourism. As part of your
pastoral experience you will stop and enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse.
Spend the night at the magnificent Hotel Moka. This hotel is built in
harmony with the landscape and has remarkable tropical trees inside (so they
would not have to be cut down).
(Lunch)
Day 7: Havana
Today the bus will take you back to Havana. After you have checked into your
hotel, taken a little break you will visit the Old Town – La Habana Vieja.
Your tour ends at the Havana Club Rum Museum, a great place to pick up some
souvenirs or drink a cocktail! Tonight’s stay is at the Habana Libre Hotel.
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Day 8: Departure
Alas, it’s time to bid farewell to vibrant Cuba. Spend the morning at your
leisure. Take last stroll through Havana’s colorful streets and explore the
hidden treasures of the Old town of Havana before the bus takes you back to
